I’ve added links to books I’ve bought, read and liked in the sidebar. Ed Verosky has a number of books on flash and boudoir which are excellent. JimmyD from Pretty Girl Shooter has just brought out Guerilla Glamor, which I’m currently reading. I like Jimmy’s no nonsense, down to earth, writing. While I’m not a glamour shooter, there are elements of it in model photography, so it’s good information to have. Both Ed and Jimmy have their ebooks priced at $9.95.
David duChemin is the prime instigator of Craft and Vision books. Each book is a small read, with beautiful imagery and excellent advice. They’re only $5 and there’s often deals for multiple copies. Buying through the links costs the same as from the site itself.
I want to be clear that I’m not putting stuff there just because. This is stuff I like!
It’s a bit ironic that I find that Jay McLoughin (http://flickr.com/photos/jaymond) was going on about Terry Richardson.. I’ve been looking at a bunch of Terry’s stuff recently, including his own tumblr account, and that of fans.
The irony extends even further, because with a recent shoot with Alex, we went a bit Terry, but using my newly purchased flash bracket and cord.
Good fun practicing with different bounced flash looks, but it was the direct flash that Terry is known for, and I really liked the shots we got doing that.
Of course most of the rest of the shoot was softboxes and beauty dishes, but this made for a refreshing change.
I spoke to Kevin Cummins from NAIP on the phone today. I asked a few questions which seem to be on peoples minds and got quite reasonable and straightforward answers.
On the issue of transparancy:
“As we said at the launch, the aim of this organisation is to be as transparent as humanly possible.”
On founding members having Licentiateships:
“The members already have Licentiateships from other organisations, so it’s fitting that they have them here.”
On the process of going to higher distinction levels and competitions:
“We intend using external judges. For example one of speakers Ramon Sammut holds Fellowship distinctions. Despite people thinking we are out to get the IPPA, we’re not, and would use judges from there too. With distinctions, we want the people there to see the judging. If they fail they will know exactly why they failed, and can have time to ask the judges about it. The Licentiateship will not be an easy panel, we want the distinctions to be the highest quality.”
It’s been quiet on the blog here recently, mostly because it’s been quiet on the gig front for the most part. The only gig of note recently was Pete Doherty, and I was already busy. Anyhow, the coming month looks more interesting. In the meantime, here’s a shot of Leo from the Sawdoctors.
Local band The Sunseekers did an album launch a while back. Came across these shots yesterday, so I thought I’d post them.
The XX in Roisin Dubh 16th December. B&W; because otherwise it would be a horrible pink colour.
Modest Mouse at the Radisson
Tonight was Strike Anywhere (and 4 other bands!) at the Roisin Dubh. I was actually doing sound for all 5 bands, but took time to sneak in a few shots. Thomas moves like lightning so I was glad to get one shot that wasn’t of him all motion blur!
I can’t believe I haven’t posted in a month. I’ve shot loads of bands in that time. Better get on with posting some of them!
I dragged a few Camera Club members along to the Roisin Dubh to Shoot La Galaxie. The light was primarily from the back, so I went and asked for a little front light. That way the camera had a half a chance of focusing. Here’s some of my shots from the evening.
I’ve been a bit bold on the blogging front recently despite shooting loads of gigs. Anyhow here’s a cute shot of Imelda May looking at me..
As always the show was great. I’ll probably add a few more to this post when I get through the files!
As promised:
Sharon Shannon got up for 2 songs..
