It’s been a hectic time since the last post. I’ve been doing lunchtime gigs and shooting the festival gigs in the evening. I’ve also been article writing, prepping video and trying to catch up on sleep lost as I attempt to whittle my images down to fit on one drive rather than on 3. I’m almost there, with the last folder to copying across in the background here.
I will post some pictures shortly, but not tonight.. I did have a picture in the Evening Herald, Hot Press and the Galway Advertiser this week, so it’s a bit of an oddity compared with usual as I don’t shoot press normally.
I’m also writing an article for a big American magazine, but I’ll talk about that when it goes to press.
For me the Macnas Parade is less about the floats and spectacle, and more about the people. And not necessarily just the performers either. That’s not the first time I’ve said this on the blog either! This year the parade took on a different guise as a ‘Happening’ where all the bits went different ways and met up for a finale. So here’s a little slideshow of some of the shots from this year.
As part of Scott Kelby’s World Wide Photo Walk, I led the Galway section of the walk. With 25 people signed up, I figured we may end up with less due to the rather dismal weather. It started raining as we waited for the last few stragglers to show up. We managed 15 or so, not bad considering how wet it was.
Our route took us down Shop Street, through the market, down by the Cladagh and around by the docks, finally ending at Bar No. 8. I forewent the 5DII in my bag and shot with my Canon G9 compact instead.

Socially, it was great to meet so many people that I’ve seen on forums, but never interacted with before. While the weather was damp, spirits weren’t, so I think the group will meet again. I’ve just set up a Flickr group so those involved can share photos independent of the competition aspect of the walk: http://www.flickr.com/groups/galwayphotowalk.
I see that the Ranger Quadra kit I posted about a few posts back is being released in the US now.
Scott Kelby has a video and some details about it on the Photoshop Insider Blog. Joe McNally was shooting with it last week, a cool diver shot in the water. Scott Kelby has a setup shot on his blog too.
Weddings shooters shot especially take note. This setup gives you the power to overcome the sun at midday.. Way more power and control than you’d get with a speedlight, and remotely controlable to boot. You can even mix it with TTL flashes.
