Great lighting in this portrait, but there seems to be too much jpg compression. The transitions from grey to black are pretty blocked up and distracts from the shot.

Could also be due to sharpening as well as the jpg compression. I'll redo this one.

yeah, this looks much better. The black gradients are always tough when you try to save size for web display. I run into it all the time myself. It's a tradeoff on file size vs. image quality.

2 lights. One softbox on the camera left with a reflector on the right. The 2nd lamp is bare bulb behind him about 6 inches from the background.

Powerful masculine lighting, nice toning. Good modeling around the chin and cheekbones, nicely deepset eyesockets. Often a serious problem for some studio photographers who spend most of their time softening things for girlie lighting. Incidentally, the subtlty of the hair light makes this pop. Hope this is for his portfolio... It'll get work.
